Elna as a manufacturer entered the market reasonably late compared to other companies, with their first machines only being produced in 1940. While this first model included the "break-through" innovation of a free-arm, the machine was probably best known for its green color. Most previous machines having been black with gold trimmings.

They often lack all the whistles and bells of the modern machines (large touch screens, etc), but they certainly do not lack in capability.
